I went fly fishing this morning with SteveL. I was out before sunrise because I knew the surfers would be taking advantage of a small south swell rolling in and parking would be tight. Steve said he was going to meet me at our usual spot so I walked down the beach to our usual fishing area.
The water was like glass. No wind but some chop from the waves that were rolling in. As I started to fish I got a text from Steve. WTF, no parking available. The surfers snagged all the spots, so he said he was going to drive down the coast to see if there was any parking at our other location. He found an open space so I told him to fish down towards me and I would drive him back to his car after we were done.
The morning was slow cast after slow cast with no takers. I saw Steve walking towards me then bam! Fish on!
This bonefish wasn't as big as the others I’ve caught lately but it put up a good fight. When I got it in I saw that the o’io was hooked in the cheek. This fish must have been hungry. It was funny not seeing the hook not in the fish’s mouth.
Steve hooked up with one that took him about 75 yards into his backing and it was a good sized fish. We started to walk down the coast as the tide was dropping. The day was turning out to be really nice, with no wind blowing all the time like on recent days. And we were fishing.
We walked all the way down the coast when I got another hi. It was small rat around twp to three pounds. After that fish we went in and washed ourselves and the gear off before I drove Steve back to his car.
EQUIPMENT: We use 7 to 9 weight rods and floating weight-forward saltwater lines. Leaders can vary from 8 to 12 feet (depending on fishing conditions) with tippets ranging from 15 to 30 pounds. We carry a variety of flies from 1/0 to size 12, mainly shrimp and crab patterns.
