I had some free time so I decided to go out to do some fly fishing on the flats this afternoon.
I got to the beach at 3:30pm. The tide was heading down, so I walked to my spot and started to cast.
After 10 minutes I had a hit. It turned out to be a small three pounder. After letting it go I walked down about 15 yards and started to cast again. In a short while I had a solid hook up.
This fish took off like a rocket. It took me into my backing and I though it was going over the breakers but I stopped it short of the waves. The fish took me on three long runs until I finally got it to come in towards me. The fish circled and circled. It did not want to come in but it finally surrendered.
When I finally got my hands on the bonefish in it was a big boy, measuring 23 1/2 inches and weighing in at 7 pounds.
I fished for a little while more before making it to The Rock. I was scanning the area and saw a shape coming towards me. I made a cast and let the fly sit until the fish got close. I made two short strips and “Bam.” The fish went wild and took off the breakers. At this point of the story I will leave you with what you think happened to that fish.
EQUIPMENT: Use a fast action 8 or 9 weight rod and floating line with an aggressively tapered leader and heavy tippet.
