A report from Eric for
mikescatchreport.com
I went out with Steve this morning to fly fish the flats.
The weather was nice but overcast as we walked down the
beach to the point and started fishing.
Steve was watching me cast and came over to give me some
pointers. He let me use his Albright XX 7 weight rod with a
Lamson reel with 8 weight line.
As I was practicing some casts I had a bite. The fish took
off running, taking all of the fly line and 20 to 30 yards
of backing before the line went slack. I told Steve I might
have had a wind knot on the leader and it must have broke
at the knot. I reeled up to check the knot but the leader
was frayed so the fish must have run into the coral.
Anyway I gave Steve his rod and around 10 to 15 minutes
later he hooked into a 3.5 pound O’io. He had to
work his fish free from some coral heads but he landed the
fish, tagged it and let it go to fight another day.
Also as we were fishing in close, we saw a lot of big bones
tailing. Steve tried to cast to one but no takers.
