The Salmon River, Oswego
County, NY, March 2008
Greg Liu, a guide on the Salmon River in Pulaski, New York, sent this photo
of a steelhead he caught with a dry fly.
This species of fish are usually caught while drifting
subsurface flies (egg patterns, large nymphs, etc.)
through deep pockets and runs along the river. Greg
works out of Whitakers Sport Shop in Pulaski and
specializes in first class fly fishing trips. He has
guided in Alaska, Chile and Russia and is also a great
instructor if you're interested in learning how to
spey cast. I usually tag along with Jin when he fishes
with Greg during the fall run of steelhead and I'm
always amazed that his knowledge of the river and the
fish that inhabit it is as outstanding as his
repertoire of 'Green Acres' one-liners or 'Three Stooges' finger-poke tactics.
