A report from SteveL

I went out at 5:30am to try fishing at the mouth of the channel with a sinking line. I could see Toau (Blacktail snapper, Lutjanus fulvus) and Moana (Barred goatfish, Parupeneus multifasciatus) swimming along the reef edge.
I caught nothing. I should have brought bait. I can just see Jin wince at that. Just like you and your worm flies. What can I say. It works - the idea is to catch fish, no? Alas, "Nevah bring bait" - we all make mistakes - so I switched over to floating line and flyfished in front of the stream. I hooked a nice fish but never saw it. It went into the coral and cut my leader.
The tide rapidly dropped and the water drained off the flats -- by 9am everything was exposed.
This was the sight as I walked back to the right-of-way. The surfers always leave their rubber slippers at the end of the right-of-way. No one ever steals their slippers - it's their front-door to the ocean (in Hawaii you take off your shoes and slippers at the front door). Now you don't see that along the Potomac!
