A report from SteveL
SteveT’s friend Lawrence was in town on business last week and Steve asked me to take him fishing.

The tides were not the best, with one giant falling tide throughout most of the day and a little bump in the late afternoon. The weather also presented challenges with a constant 20+mph northeast wind blowing.

On Friday we started at the point and fished all the way down to the park. It took us to about 2pm to walk that short stretch. We managed to pull in five O'io in that time.  For Lawrence it was his first Hawaiian bonefish and it weighed in about 2-pounds--not big but full of fight.

We had a late lunch at Zippy’s and I had their Ox Tail Soup and that evening we went to a Marukai sake tasting event. Lots of good food – robotayaki, sushi, tempura, etc.  And we got to sample many different grades of sake.  We started at 5:30pm and lasted through to the end at 9pm.   Nothing like fine food and drink.

On Saturday I decided to take Lawrence to Triangle Flats. The wind was still gusting but much less than the previous day which made paddling and fishing a lot easier.  According to EdT at Nervous Water Fly Fishers, there would be a small window of about 1.5 to 2 hours to fish the falling tide. We went out early on the high tide and fished until there was only about 6-inches of water left on the flats. I spotted about 20 fish and put Lawrence on some really big tailers, 8 to 10 pounders, but he couldn’t entice a bite.  However it was a thrill to be able to see so many big O'io up close.  In the late afternoon we paddled back to the harbor and after washing down the kayaks went to fish the small rising tide on the flats hoping I could get him onto another fish. We fished there until the sun set.

That evening we headed to Maguroya, a Japanese restaurant in Kaimuki. I ate the deep fried Moi - awesome dish.
